1993 made history.
Heading into the 35th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, offshore reports had anglers feeling optimistic. Expectations were high, with a new three-level entry format and a record purse on the line, 172 boats were registered.
Tuesday was the first big day of the tournament.
Fishing aboard CHASER with Captain Randy Fagley, angler Kathy Keel hooked a blue marlin that would make her the first female to hold a Big Rock record. After an intense fight — and another 20 minutes just to get the fish onboard — the fish was weighed in at 759-pounds, breaking the previous Big Rock record of 720-pounds held by Brad Gillam aboard OUTLAW, Keel’s record would hold for 7 years.
But that wasn’t the only story unfolding offshore.
GET-A-WAY battled a blue marlin for nine hours, watching it strip nearly 900 yards of line again and again before a shark took a bite out of the fish just before it reached the boat, leaving it disqualified. It’s still one of the most unforgettable “what could have been” moments in tournament history.
By week’s end, the numbers spoke for themselves:
- 172 boats
- 141 billfish caught
- 127 released
- 90% release rate.
1993 wasn’t just another Big Rock— it was the year records fell, legends were made, and another unforgettable chapter was written in tournament history. 🎣🏆
That’s a wrap on the Big Rock Triple Crown 🏆
The closest leaderboard we’ve ever seen - with just one release separating first and third, and just 5.1 points separating first and second. Congratulations STREAM WEAVER on the well deserved win.
